Second rendezvous with the Berliner Philharmoniker's Konzertmeiser and their Mozart-Brahms mirror program.
The evening begins with the piano quartet K. 493, a relatively rare formation in the history of music, and indeed, few composers have attempted it after Mozart, much preferring the trio form with the piano. It was thus as a pioneer that Mozart embarked on the composition of his piano quartets, K. 493 being the second, the "fusion of the quartet and the concerto," as his biographers Jean and Brigitte Massin have emphasized. Brahms composed three piano quartets. His third and last, Opus 60, underwent several revisions but remains the most accomplished in the mastery of his writing. To conclude this evening, the sumptuous clarinet quintet from opus 115, one of the most accomplished pages of clarinet literature and of Brahms's work.
