An enthusiastic trio illuminates with their talent the poignant Trio Op. 50 "In Memory of a Great Artist" by Tchaikovsky and Op. 67 by Shostakovich. Despite the undeniable beauty of the two trios on the program, a scent of sorrow will surround the evening. With his dedication "In Memory of a Great Artist," Tchaikovsky in his Op. 50 alludes to the pianist Nikolai Rubinstein, a great friend of the composer who recently passed away. It is a page of incredible rigor, particularly for the piano part, bathed throughout the score in a melancholic lyricism of utter beauty. Pain and mourning are also discussed in Shostakovich's 1944 work, dedicated to the memory of his friend Ivan Sollertinsky, director of the Leningrad Philharmonic, and to the dead of the Dajdanek extermination camp in Poland, then recently discovered by the Russians. The work is pervaded by a powerfully obsessive tension in the repetition of themes, like a kind of long lament of pain.
