Beyond a pronounced taste for the chamber repertoire that they both practice regularly and with enthusiasm, it is also the memory of Argentina that unites them, the country where they were both born .
Sovereign in Chopin and Debussy, Nelson Goerner belongs to this category of discreet and engaging pianists. As for Sol Gabetta, "the ardent flame of the cello" as Le Monde nicknamed her , she has carved out a solid reputation as a recitalist and soloist who have opened wide the doors of leading ensembles and venues around the world to her. On the program this evening, the rare Variations concertantes by Mendelssohn, the first and so melodic sonata for cello and piano by Brahms that some nickname "pastoral sonata". To conclude, the indisputable masterpiece of the 19th century chamber repertoire, the sonata for violin and piano by César Franck, performed this evening in its transcription for cello. Among the many arrangements of this famous piece, the one for cello, of exceptional sonic beauty, received the composer's blessing. The cellist Jules Delsart, who had heard a performance of the sonata in Paris in 1887, was so enthusiastic that he asked the composer if he could make a transcription of the violin part for his instrument. Delsart remained very faithful to the original, leaving the piano part unchanged, and only transposing the violin part to a lower register when necessary and, above all, appropriate.
