Born in Budapest in 1953, Sir András Schiff is widely regarded as one of the leading interpreters of piano repertoire, particularly Bach, Beethoven, and Schubert. He performs worldwide in recital and conducts from the keyboard with his Cappella Andrea Barca ensemble. A dedicated educator, he is also deeply committed to chamber music and mentoring the next generation of pianists.
Sir András Schiff was born in Budapest in 1953 and studied at the Franz Liszt Academy with Pál Kadosa, György Kurtág, and Ferenc Rados, later continuing in London with George Malcolm. A renowned pianist and conductor, he is celebrated for his interpretations of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, and Bartók, and regularly performs worldwide, often directing from the keyboard. He founded the Cappella Andrea Barca in 1999 and has strong ties with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Schiff is also a committed mentor to young musicians and the creator of the “Building Bridges” programme. His numerous award-winning recordings appear on ECM and Decca. In 2014, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to music, and in 2024, he received the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art and the Bösendorfer Ring. He is widely regarded as one of the foremost interpreters of Bach and Beethoven today.
