A special guest of the Pierre Boulez Biennale, Daniel Barenboim, at the head of the Staatskapelle Berlin, inserts the Book for Strings into an unexpected heritage: that of Hector Berlioz and Franz Liszt, whose First Concerto Martha Argerich performs .
Daniel Barenboim presents an early and little-known work by the master: the Book for Strings consists of two sections taken from the Book for Quartet (1948-49), in a version for string orchestra that was considerably reworked and recomposed 20 years later – the original quartet having been shattered, even “exploded.” These pages of ferocious radicalism echo another: the romantic one from Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique and Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 , created under the direction of the former, while the latter played the solo part. Two composers whose friendship, made of artistic collaboration and mutual emulation, anticipates that which Daniel Barenboim and Pierre Boulez would maintain much later.
