Pierre Boulez Great Hall – Philharmonie
For health reasons, Daniel Barenboim was forced to cancel his participation in this concert. He has been replaced by Michael Wendeberg. The program remains unchanged.
When asked "What do you think of Mozart?", Boulez is said to have replied: "I don't understand this music." Behind the apparent provocation lay genuine astonishment: how could a human being have managed to compose such music in such a short time, and without a single error? This astonishment was all the greater because, when it came to composition, Boulez was the opposite of Mozart, constantly going back to the drawing board. Thus, Incises . Incises , first, had two versions, in 1994 and then 2001. In the meantime, in 1996, Boulez transfigured the piece into Incises , which revisited the material, split across three pianos, three percussionists and three harps, and deployed in a vast motivic and spectral development.
