Daniel Barenboim conducts Dérive 2, which he considers Pierre Boulez's greatest masterpiece. Through its finesse and color, this music forges a connection with the world of Claude Debussy.
Dérive 2 (1988-2006) for eleven instruments is a piece of rare scope in Pierre Boulez's oeuvre. "The word dérive can, in short, apply to the many meanders that this work described throughout its creation. It thus became a kind of journal reflecting the evolution of the musical ideas themselves, but also the way of organizing them in a kind of narrative mosaic," he declared about it. For Daniel Barenboim, "although Boulez's music has a very complex content (”¦), there is no doubt in my mind that it is French music." The composer considered Debussy – two of whose essential works from his later years will be heard – to be one of the fundamental creators of the 20th century.
