American pianist Nicholas Angelich (1970–2022) was a major figure in the world of piano. After early studies in the United States, he moved to Paris at the age of 13 to study at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique under renowned masters such as Aldo Ciccolini and Yvonne Loriod. His career took off after winning top prizes at major international competitions, notably the prestigious Gina Bachauer Competition in 1994.
From an early stage, he performed with some of the world’s leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic under Kurt Masur, the Orchestre de Paris, the London Philharmonic, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. A great interpreter of the classical and romantic repertoire—particularly the works of Beethoven, Brahms, and Liszt—he was also a passionate advocate for 20th-century music and contemporary creation, collaborating with composers such as Pierre Boulez and Pierre Henry.
A dedicated chamber musician, he frequently shared the stage with partners such as Martha Argerich, Renaud and Gautier Capuçon, and Yo-Yo Ma. Nicholas Angelich leaves behind an extensive and critically acclaimed discography, a powerful testament to the depth and brilliance of his artistry, which was tragically cut short by his passing in April 2022.
